Bahamut

In the official merchandise, Squall is pictured with the mighty Bahamut, king of the dragons and lord of the guardian forces. Squall meets with Bahamut in the ruins of the Deep Sea Research Centre. Surrounded by Ruby Dragons, in an elegant change in game protocol Bahamut first insists on a dialogue with Squall. Finding it interesting, he challenges the party to a battle and agrees to join them when they win.

lord dragon The skills and enhancements Bahamut endows him with focus on strength, magic, and protection. Also gained is the ability to forge forbidden items, and to find the same from enemies.

Bahamut's attack takes the form of a massive blast of non-elemental energy. While taking a long time to summon, it allows time enough to power up to its full potential. He also has the potential for great vitality at his highest level, awarding protection to his Junctioned.

Shiva

The guardian Squall has the highest affinity with is the ice queen, Shiva. She is with him since before the fateful SeeD exams and is the answering elemental to the first boss. The idea of the stoic lady encased in ice matches the self-imposed emotional barriers Squall places between himself and the rest of the world.

Shiva enhances vitality and spirit, offering protection against the physical and magical attacks of others. One special talent she offers is the ability to cast slow death on enemies, giving them scant seconds to fight for their lives before they fall.

When summoned, Shiva breaks free from her prison of ice, letting the shards fall as they may. Gathering the ice magic in her hands, she throws it forward, creating a razor-sharp glacier of ice under the opponent which then thrusts upwards and shatters. As an ice elemental, her attacks are extremely effective against fire elementals.

  Odin

As Seifer is on the opposing side during most of the game, you cannot see which guardian force he has equipped (though equipped he must have one, as he is capable of using magic during battle.) The trio of statuettes featuring characters and guardians pair up Seifer and Odin and given what happens in the game, it's interesting to consider how the two would have gotten along had Seifer been the one to find him.

Odin lived alone in a forgotten castle until Squall and his party found and defeated him. Odin, acknowledging Squall's superior strength, agreed to help him, but refused to Junction to anyone. Instead he chose to appear in battle on his own whim, instantly felling the enemy under his Zantetsuken, or Iron-Cutting Blade.

In other Final Fantasy games, when he appeared as a creature you could summon, he was associated with swiftness and sudden death.

Crusader

jihaad, upper Though not appearing in this game, one summoned creature from an earlier Final Fantasy Seifer couldhave felt an affinity for is Crusader (or, as it is known in Japan, Jihaad.) Crusader appeared in Final Fantasy VI, and is in reality three physical entities.

jihaad, left The unusual and unique thing about this summoned creature is that it, unlike all other summons in every single Final Fantasy game, does not remove those who they are appearing on behalf of to another plane. The trinity unleashes its attack, Purifier (also known as Tenchi no Houkai, or Destruction of Heaven and Earth) upon all the combatants, including one's own party. The attack is devastating, ensuring only the strong will have a chance of surviving it. It is very possible to accidentally annihilate one's self when summoning Crusader. jihaad, right

Crusader enhances one's potential to cast magic, and teaches the two forbidden magical spells: Merton (Meltdown) and Meteor (Meteo.)
